Share what you know about the year you were born.
1979, the year I was born. The end of the 70s. I’ll be honest, I don’t know much about the year. I know it’s the title of a song. I know I have a pen made from blank named 1979 which apparently was named by the makers grandson. I think because of the song?
I know a little bit more about what was happening around when I was born. Like I was born early March but the doctors thought I was going to come late February and it’s a good thing I didn’t because there was a blizzard and my parents were snowed in. My mother would not have tolerated a home birth. That’s just not her style. This is family lore.
I could probably do a deep dive into all that was happening in 1979. I just don’t have the desire to. Not even with this prompt. I’ve always been more interested in the present and the future than the past. Yes, I know history repeats itself and all that. But the past was never a subject I could keep interest in. We can’t fix or change it. We can’t influence it. Focusing on it often only leads to regret and melancholy even when focusing on happy moments. So why torture myself like that.
I have always looked at moments in time this way. I have fond memories in the past, but I try not to tie them to a specific time. It makes life feel more full when something that happened 4 years ago feels like a lifetime ago because my friendship with the person has blossomed so much in that time. Or conversely when it’s easy to lose track of how long it’s been since a sad moment makes that moment less heavy on my heart.
Really all that matters to me about 1979 is that I was born. I believe in past lives and reincarnation so I believe this wasn’t my soul’s first time on earth but this is the existence I have now and it started on that day in 1979 and I am grateful. No matter how chaotic or challenging the last 46 years have been, my current journey started that day and I have learned so much. I have so much still to learn.
