What could you do differently?
This is one of those prompts that makes my literal thinking brain’s blood boil. There are lots of things I could do differently. I could sit differently, I could do my hair differently. I could talk different. I could drink coffee instead of tea. I could eat better or worse. I could not care about any thing. Are you catching my point?
There’s a difference between the millions of things in life I could do differently and the things I should do differently. Using the list above for examples. I definitely should be sitting differently. I also should eat better. As for my hair, I guess that would depend on what I was doing if it qualified as a should? Like wearing it down when riding a roller coaster makes less sense than pulling it back. I definitely should not drink coffee instead of tea because coffee and I do not get along as much as I love it. I definitely should not stop caring.
On top of this, I think a better, more thought provoking question is “what would you do differently?” Or even better, “what would you have done differently?” Now, do I have answers to these? Maybe, but they weren’t the questions that were asked and I’m hesitant to answer them because maybe they will be and then I either have to come up with more or repeat myself, and neither of those things is particularly desirable.
So for now, dear reader, you get my little diatribe on why the question that was asked is silly.
