Write about your first name: its meaning, significance, etymology, etc.
Let me start of by saying I’ve never been the biggest fan of my first name. It’s not the worst name by far, I just had some personal struggles with it.
Jamie, being a unisex name, led to some issues in early school years. Teachers not paying attention to anything but the name and assuming I was a boy for example. It’s funny, now that I think back on the one particular story around that where the Spanish teacher assigned us Spanish names in advance of class starting, my response alone should have diagnosed my autism. Anyway, I digress.
According to my research, Jamie means supplanter or holder of heel. It is apparently derived from the Hebrew Jacob. As a Jew by birth, this makes sense that my parents chose it but I honestly don’t think they cared about the Hebrew origins. Jamie was also the 19th most popular name the year I was born. It is unisex although more traditionally male before gaining popularity in the 70s. It is also a nickname for James that has Scottish origins.
The funny thing with that nickname thing is that James was my nickname with my parents and grandparents. There are a very few other people I let call me that as well. There is one memory of being at my grandparents apartment as a child and them have a repairman or painter there and his name must have been James because my grandmother called out “James” and we both responded.
Now, the significance behind my name is a bit different. See I was named after my great grandparents Joseph and Belle. You can’t really tell from my English name Jamie Beth but in my Hebrew name, it’s very apparent, Yosepha Bella. I mean it doesn’t get more literal than that.
Funny thing about names, the older we get, the less it feels like we use them. Like in school we hear are names all the time. With family as well. As an adult, I see my name in writing far more than I hear it. Sure people at work say hi and use it but it’s such a small part of the overall conversation. At home, we almost never use names, preferring pet names. Definitely one of those the more of the name that is used, the more in trouble we are type houses.
