Write about a few of your favorite family traditions.
I honestly don’t really have any favorite family traditions. My blood family has traditions, lots of them. We’re Jewish after all. If you’ve ever seen Fiddler on the Roof, you know it’s all about Tradition! Sorry I couldn’t help it, I hear it that way in my head every time I hear the word.
Those aren’t my traditions though and I’ve noticed as that family drifts apart and dwindles in size, they practice those traditions less and less. As for my chosen family, we don’t have traditions. Not yet and maybe not ever.
I think it’s a combination of factors. One we are all very neurodivergent in various ways and that changes the landscape a lot when it comes to traditions. There’s the ADHD plans to have something be a tradition but the lack of follow through to make it one. There’s the Autistic need for routine and structure which works really well for a tradition until we take it too far and become obsessive about the way it happens every time. There’s other big factor I see is that we as a family don’t do well with things the are obligatory and traditions are like the master of all obligations.
Maybe one day, in our own time and in our own way we will organically develop some traditions. For now, I like the spontaneity of what we do. It keeps life interesting.
