Write about your approach to budgeting.

I believe in a balanced approach or at least thats what I think of it as. I don’t believe in having zero debt. Would it be nice to be able to do that, sure but I’m not sacrificing the life I want in order to live to that standard. That said, my credit cards have never been maxed out and the only other debt I have is a mortgage and the car loans.

I believe it’s important to have savings. I have multiple savings accounts. Some are actual savings accounts, some are investments, and some are checking accounts that hold money. I also believe in buffers. I keep a strict buffer in my primary checking account. Our mortgage account has multiple months of mortgage payments saved up in it.

That’s the other thing I believe in having different accounts for different purposes so that I don’t have to stress about accidentally spending money needed for something else. Everyone in this house has an account specifically for their car payment. For me, it’s for our car insurance because I don’t have a car payment. We have an account for our mortgage. We also have an account for other house expenses like the lawn care and pest control.

As for the regular budgeting, when I say balanced, I mean some to savings, some to debt, some to other bills and needs, and always something to treat myself every paycheck, Doesn’t have to be big but always something. It took me a long time to get comfortable with that last one. I was alway protective of money because of the what ifs to the point where I wasn’t allowing myself any room for fun for me. But with the help of the important people in my life, I have learned that I have the room in my budget to do both, protect the future and enjoy the present.
