Which aspects do you think makes a person unique?
I think many things make a person unique. We are the sum of our parts after all. For example, I am not unique just because I dye my hair purple or have tattoos but the way I dye it combined with the specific tattoos I have certainly adds to my uniqueness. Add to those superficial aspects deeper ones like how we see the world and you start to see how even when people seem like they are but sheep in a herd, they are all unique. I think the hardest part today is that so many people feel they have to hide their thought processes or their other more unique qualities because standing out seems dangerous right now. It’s better to blend and fit in with the crowd.
That is patently wrong. I’m here to encourage everyone to always be true to their authentic self. Yes, it’s really scary and often painful but it’s so, so rewarding in the long run. The feeling of being open and genuine and sharing what you feel in your core, that is something beyond special. Those that find the courage to do that, right now, in today’s world where standing out and being different looks and feels dangerous, those are our most unique people.
I’m not going to say it’s easy or that it doesn’t come with some big emotions. It’s hard and heavy and challenging and there will be days that you second guess yourself but in the long run you will feel lighter and freer for doing it.
I invite you to join me in breaking free from the idea that we must all be the same and share the same ideals and to learn to share your independent thoughts and feelings while respecting those of others. That my friends is our path out of this hellscape we have found ourselves in.
I recently read a quote by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that resonated with me. I’m going to share it here in hopes it resonates with you and we can take one step closer to a better world
We must discover the power of love, the redemptive power of love. And when we discover that, we will be able to make of this old world a new world. Love is the only way.
In loving ourselves enough to be true to ourselves and loving each other enough to respect our differences even when we don’t understand them, we can make changes for the better. I hope others can learn to see that and believe that as strongly as I do and we can become a society of unique and powerful thinkers and doers rather that a herd of sheep following a deranged shepherd off a cliff.
