Daily Prompt – February 2, 2026

What’s your favorite thing to cook?

I don’t cook very much. Following recipes can be hard on my brain because of literal thinking. Many recipes aren’t clearly written, at least from my perspective. They seem to assume the reader knows or understands certain things and I feel like I have to read between the lines to understand the steps.

That said, there is a recipe that I have from my mother for Black Bottom Cupcakes that I modified and I enjoy making the modification. I’m sure she got this recipe from somewhere but black bottom cupcakes are rich chocolate cupcakes with a cheesecake section on top. The original recipe is amazing but I found I really like the cheesecake part and so I just started making that by itself. It helped that I had friends that were gluten free long before I was and doing just the cheesecake part was an easy and delicious modification.

I started doing it as little cheesecake bites. It’s essentially a baked crustless chocolate chip cheesecake. I have tried doing it as a bar but it doesn’t come out as well. I haven’t made them in a few years though. Mostly because time.

My other favorite thing to cook, which I guess is more cooking as those cheesecake bites are baking, is pasta. I like to concoct pasta you might say. I will make a big batch of pasta, not from scratch mind you I’m not that good. While it’s cooking I’ll scavenge the pantry for things I can add to it. Usually kidney beans and cheese and olives. It depends on what I have and what sounds good. I’ll mix all this in with some olive oil and maybe some balsamic vinegar. It’s something that can be enjoyed regardless of the pasta’s temperature. I prefer doing it with spaghetti but almost any pasta will work. Unfortunately, this is less tasty with gluten-free pasta as most of those don’t handle being served anything but freshly made very well.

So yeah, I don’t cook much.

    1. I don’t have a recipe. Perhaps you missed the point where I said it’s a concoction of whatever I have in the pantry that I think would taste good. I encourage you to try it for yourself. Make some pasta and see what you have in your kitchen that just feels like it would be tasty mixed. Breaking away from recipes and strict rules about food is a good creative exercise!
