Who are your favorite people to be around?
I am probably overthinking this prompt, what else is new? I can’t figure out if it is asking me to talk about specific people or like a generalized concept of people. It’s probably meant to be ambiguous so I could write however I interpret it but my brain hates ambiguous!
My favorite people to be around are my chosen family. Now like any family, there are some members I don’t like but in this case I didn’t chose them, other members did and I am not obligated to like them or even be around them. That is one of the joys of chosen family.
My chosen family consists of my partners, near and far, as well as dear friends who I am closer to than my own family. I have 2 sets of surrogate parents and more siblings than I ever anticipated as an only child. I love seeing these people even if I only get to do once or twice a year.
They are my family, not only because I chose them, but because the mutual love and support we provide. No obligation, none of the bullshit that comes with biological families. It’s mutual. It’s consensual. I hate to repeat myself but it’s chosen. Like there is power in that choice. We chose to care about each other. We choose what that looks like. We choose how much energy we give each other and we choose not to force ourselves on each other’s lives.
They are my favorite people to be around because their care for me is genuine. It is not borne of obligation but of true desire to support. They are my favorite people to be around because we understand each other even when we disagree. They are my favorite people because around them I can truly be me, no mask, no filter.
I hope everyone has a family like I do.

I think to a certain degree this is true for many. I like how you put this. I have some family that I could do without but they are there, or somewhere that I don’t pay much attention too.
