Daily Prompt – February 25, 2026

If you could permanently ban a word from general usage, which one would it be? Why?

This is an interesting prompt and challenging one. I don’t know that there is a word I would completely ban. There is however a word I would like to control the usage of. I have issues with the word “promise”

A promise is meant to have weight to it. It is a declaration but too many people use it lightly. They say they promise to do something when what they mean is they will try to do it. The intent of effort they will put in doesn’t align with the intent of effort promise implies. This does not sit well with me. If someone makes me a promise I expect that to be held to the standard of a promise and it’s very disappointing when thats not the case. I would much prefer if people would say what they actually meant. It’s not hard to say I will do my best to x or I will try to do y is it?

This is a general theme for me. I can’t stand coded language. I really prefer when people speak directly and not play around with words. I say what I mean and mean what I say. It would be nice if everyone could do that. Especially when it comes to powerful words like promise.
