How did you meet your significant other?

Technically, I met my husband at Karaoke night at a local dive bar. The story is however, much more complex than that. Every Wednesday a group of people would head to this bar for karaoke after a group dinner. I was never able to make dinner due to my work schedule but I could make karaoke on my way home. On the night I met my husband, I was at karaoke to try to talk to a guy I had been interested in but who had decided he needed to focus elsewhere. Not my finest moment for sure but it led to the best 10 years of my life so far so, can’t complain. Anyway, my husband was also there that night and when my plans didn’t work out I was mingling or wallflowering depending on how you want to look at it. Hubby was in the back smoking section, dive bar remember, telling a story. He’s an excellent story teller and I was listening intently. He noticed and interrupted his storytelling to use my head as an arm rest. I’m much shorter than him so he found it funny.

I met my girlfriend the year after I met my husband. He and I were at an event she was vending at with her future husband. From the moment I met her, I thought she was cute but I was too shy to say anything. Over the years we developed a friendship. We saw each other multiple times a year at events and had a good report. She and her husband even got married the same year hubby and I did. We’ve always just kinda clicked. But I knew she was bi or pan because of things she would post on social media but what I didn’t know is if she and her husband were polyamorous like I was. And if she was, would she be interested in me. Events weren’t happening during the pandemic for obvious reasons but at the first one back, after realizing how much I missed that time with her, I asked her if she would be my girlfriend. We’ve been together, long distance, for 5 years this year.

My comet partner I met at an event a number of years ago before the pandemic but after meeting hubby and my girlfriend. He was part of a special event at that event and I really enjoyed his company and he was very sexy. We had very different philosophies on relationships at the time. I suppose we still do but we’ve learned how to work together in ours over time. Back then though, he was all about casual and I was all about needing commitment. It actually took a couple of years after we started dating for him to reach the point to consider me a girlfriend and now because of how much distance there is and how much our lives have changed, we’re back to more casual but the love is deep and strong.

My spouse, well you might see this coming, I also met them at an event. These events are full of people who think a lot like I do so it’s easy to make strong connections there. Anyway, this was 4 years ago. It was their first time. I was full of strong opinions and they were full of zest and a desire to explore all the event had to offer. I was sure I was going to annoy them and come across as the bitchy woman who was too opinionated for her own good. Instead they became enthralled and determined to get to know me. There was a moment during the event (ok, more than one), where I told them to “stop making me fall in love with you.” and I meant it. By the end of the event we were strongly bonded and have been together ever since. There have been some really rough patches, we still have our moments. But I can’t imagine life without them. They are my travel buddy, my concert companion, my life line when my brain fails me.
