Daily Prompt – April 30, 2026

Halloween is definitely my favorite holiday. I wasn’t allowed to go trick-or-treating until I was 8 but I’ve always loved the holiday. I love the decorations and the costumes. I did have a tendency, once I was allowed to pick my own costume of picking very obscure costumes but that really shouldn’t surprise anyone.

I can’t fully say why it’s my favorite holiday. Maybe because it’s a zero expectation holiday. It’s not religious or familial. It doesn’t involve a dinner that I have to suffer through or any other kind of gathering with small talk. I mean yes, lots of people have Halloween parties but they are not the only way to celebrate. Trick-or-treating is totally optional on all sides. Don’t want to go out, don’t. Don’t want people coming by, turn your porch light off. Open to giving out candy but don’t want the interaction, just put a bowl out. You can be someone else, or you can dress how you really want if there weren’t so many rules.

I guess in many ways Halloween is a neurodivergent person’s best holiday because it caters to us the best.
