Daily Prompt – May 21, 2026

There’s no such thing as perfect. That said, I can describe how I plan an enjoyable road trip. I want to preface this by acknowledging two very important details about my planning process when it comes to road trips. One, I am never the driver so that will be different for most people. Two, things that work for me and my usual roadtrip partner may not work for everyone. In fact some of it is hard on me but I’ve worked to adapt for him because of point one.

My husband and I roadtrip well together. He doesn’t mind doing all of the driving so thats a huge plus. We tend to go on at least one roadtrip a year. Making this enjoyable starts with understanding what each of us needs and figuring out the compromises. For example I’m a planner, he is very spontaneous. Finding a balance between the two is essential. This usually looks like letting me do a lot of planning before the trip, being hyper organized about packing and such and allowing him the freedom to stop when he wants to stop and drive as long as he wants to drive as long as its safe.

Music, I let him pick. He’s driving so it has to keep him awake and focused. I can always put on headphones and listen to something different if I don’t like his choice but we are pretty aligned musically and he is very respectful if I say that a song is really irritating or something.

Food, snacks are essential. Having the car well stocked with food and drink is important. Cuts down on expensive stops and eating food we wouldn’t normally eat. They need to be packed into the car in accessible places so that either of us can get them while we are on the road but there will always be some that will need to be grabbed during a stop to replenish the easy access stash. We each bring a water bottle and have a large one we keep in the car to refill from. This cuts down on buying disposable water bottles.

Other than that how enjoyable it is comes down to the fact that we enjoy each other’s company and we have great conversations. We can’t control traffic or things like that but we can control what happens in the car.
