What is the meaning of life?
I love when we get deep questions like this for a prompt. I think the meaning of life differs for everyone because everyone’s life is different. Ask a group of nerdy people and you will of course get the answer of 42, a reference to the incredible “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” Ask those who are more philosophical and you’ll get thoughts on living a life that is fulfilling and inspiring to you. Ask those with a humorous streak and you’ll get a talks of pancakes and cookies and silly inside jokes.
How do I know? Because I crowdsourced this prompt out of curiosity and the love of a good conversation. Nothing more fun than posing a question like this in a lively chat room and collecting the answers.
As for me, the meaning of life is pretty simple. Do the things I enjoy. Control what I can control and work to let go of what I cannot. Be kind and caring and authentic and create a life that supplies the same. Work to live and not live to work. Curate my world around the things that bring me joy and let go of those that cause stress and harm.
Life isn’t about perfection. Somewhere a long the line, humans started striving to make everything perfect. It doesn’t exist and in the attempts to achieve it, we lose sight of the joy of imperfection. I own my own struggles with perfection. In fact my artistic pursuits are to fight that instict. To remember the observer of the art doesn’t see the flaws I see and I don’t need to fix every mistake or scrap a work just because of something being off. The goal is to keep going, to learn, to improve, and to find joy in the experience.
I think for me, life is learning, Not just education. Learning from others. Learning from experience. Learning in all forms. When we stop learning, we stop growing and without growth, life ceases to have meaning. We become mindless drones and that is not a life, thats barely an existence.
